"Alexis's Origami Mommy!"
RE: Origami activities you'll enjoy,
guaranteed!
Welcome to the "Origami
Army!"
(My daughter has an imagination, doesn't she?):
Before we began I spilled my coffee all over the paper I'd gathered up from around the house and I was in no mood, by the time I cleaned it all up, for a "project."
Alexis on the other had, was excited enough for both of us.
She had brought home a book from her 1st grade school library and wasn't going to take "No" for an answer... she wanted a LadyBug!
LadyBug's
All Over the Kitchen Table...
Laughter Ringing Through Our Home!
After the fourth Origami LadyBug (pink, of course) and the second or third Origami Puppy Dog, both my daughter and I were hooked.
It was the most fun we had together, just playing and enjoying each other's company, in a long time and we sat there making Origami Boxes, LadyBugs, Puppy Dogs and Stars until well past Alexis's bedtime that Tuesday evening.
Origami Becomes
Our Little
Mommy /Daughter
Ritual...
At least once or twice a month now, Alexis and I sit down with a bowl of popcorn some new Origami projects and a stack of paper.
Usually, we just use newspapers (but Alexis doesn't like the newspaper so much because the "black rubs off on her hands and she can't "color on it as fun"...") or other scrap paper we can find around the house (what happened to all of that junk mail we used to get anyway?)...
I like the white copier paper, scraps from work, myself... because it's easy to draw and color on... we also use magazine pages (which work really well because they are thin and some of the projects we do are easier with thinner paper)...
Alexis likes it when we use the dollar bills and gum wrappers because her friends think it's "cool."
"I would have never even consideredOrigami as an activity for my daughter and me...
Today, I can't imagine not having our Project Time together... had she not brought that book home from the school library that day, we'd be missing some of the best Mommy / Daughter times together!"
But, enough about Alexis and me...
You came here because you're interested in Origami yourself.... well, at least I hope that is why you came here.
If not, maybe it's just fate and somebody is telling you to read my short letter and discover for yourself the wonderful world of Origami...
For instance, did you know that Origami is known to help relieve stress and reduce arthritis pain in some folks?
Of course, it's also just plain fun - especially, when you do Origami with your children, family, or close friends!
Now that you're here, go ahead -- scroll down the page and take a look at some of the beautiful Origami pictures and even the projects in my new book (Alexis and I made some of these ourselves!)
Abe Lincoln, (a $5 bill!) below is one I learned to make for leaving tips at restaurants - it always brings a smile!

Imagine having a FREE stress management tool that's available wherever you can find a piece of paper!
Folding Origami is very effective at helping me relax when I feel anxious... I'd bet Origami helps you relax as well, especially on those days when a little folding distraction is just what you need.
It's likely, you know someone who would enjoy a copy of Teach Me Origami! which makes a great gift... something to think about as you take a look around.
So, read on and discover for yourself how Origami is very fun, relaxing, enjoyable and even therapeutic... you're very glad you decided to stay here and get a copy for yourself... at least enjoy the pictures!
Discover the
History of Origami
for Family Trivia and
Fun...
I know, I know...
History isn't for everyone, but I include a few interesting details and facts inside my book for you, to share with friends or family or... just for laughs.
When you are folding with a friend or family, it's fun to think about the Samurai warriors or the young Japanese couple just getting started in their marriage...
Below, are a few things I cover about the history of Origami:
- How old is the Origami and who were the first people to
practice the art of Origami? Find out inside... (pg. 5)
- The Art of the Samurai? Discover
how Samurai Warriors used this art form... (pg. 5)
- Want a wish to come true? Folding 1000 of these Origami
figures is said to grant the person one wish... Find out
what Origami creature you must fold to get your wish! (pg.
6)
- In 1797 the first Origami book was
published... what was it called? (answer:
pg. 6)
- Origami to help with Arthritis?
Yep... scientific proof now available.
- Discover what other health benefits becoming an Origami
artist provides (hint, need to relax and unwind from a stressful
day?)...
In a world full of technology...
- TV's,
- MP3 Players,
- cell phones,
- iPods,
- iPads,
- Computers,
- Internet,
- Video Games,
- Microwaves,
- Automobiles,
- Facebook and hundreds of other distractions...
... the simple practice of folding a piece of paper to make a rose or a boat... a dog, hat... or a flower for a friend, seems old fashioned, but once you try it you'll see that it's not old fashioned at all...
Giving these small gifts, directly from and made by you, is actually about as modern and new as a car that runs on air alone would be!
These Random Acts of Kindness are just so rare these days it seems... why not share them with someone you love?
As you learn more about Origami, you'll find that therapists are even starting to recognize the benefits of Origami among school children in group activities...
More Great Family Fun
- Families are discovering that folding Origami
together is even more fun and relaxing than playing board games
because you can talk with each other and share your day, discuss
important or even just fun topics without keeping score or worrying
about who rolls the dice next.
- Young children get a feeling of accomplishment
and love to have older children and adults help them learn how to fold
the different Origami shapes.
- Older children discover that making small, thoughtful gifts
for friends is so rare - their Origami instantly
gets smiles and hugs from their friends and family.
- Not only that, but Origami art is rarely just
tossed in the trash!
- A gift of Origami art is cherished and kept indefinitely... remembered always.
How would you feel if a friend of yours took the time to fold a beautiful Origami Crane in exquisite detail for you as a gift?
Older
Men and Women
Exchange Origami Gifts !
In a time when every gift is purchased... it's rare, and very special, when someone takes the time to create something for you, isn't it?
Watch your friends eyes light up when you share a beautiful Origami hand-made box with a detailed Origami ring or creation inside... it's magical.
Families share Origami folding as a fun activity...
It's true that might seem old fashioned, but if you would like to get to know your family better, give it a try - you'll be pleasantly surprised.
"Older folks create Origami as gifts and as inexpensive activities to keep the arthritis pain at bay because actively using their hands keeps the joints moving, the stiffness of arthritis reduced..."
Your Origami creations make great gifts or they often simply open up a conversation with a friend about your Origami art.
It sure beats discussing the weather or what's for dinner again...
Plus, learning Origami allows you an opportunity to learn something new and gives you a fun activity to practice that creates valuable gifts, art, others appreciate.
Origami in the Classroom
A Fantastic Learning Tool!
Start with very simple folds and Origami art pieces and watch the children beam with a sense of accomplishment, help each other, and take pride in what they've done.
Isn't that part of what teaching is all about?
To encourage expression and creativity? To give opportunities for children to work together and help each other?
Try a simple Origami exercise in class and watch how much fun the children have... truly a joy to see.
Need Origami
Stress
Management?
Origami can be done anywhere you can fold paper...
- Sitting in an airport,
- While eating in a restaurant (*Origami Dollar folding is a GREAT way to leave tips for wait staff and always brings a smile!),
- Waiting at the doctors or dentists office,
- Riding on the bus or flying in an airplane,
- Even, while watching the television or, like me...
- When you are simply thinking about your day,
your schedules, or between projects
at holidays around family and friends...
You can enjoy Origami pretty much... anywhere!
"And, since Origami folding is qualified as a stress management activity - you now have a tool to help calm you down and refocus almost anywhere you are at any time of the day or night!"
Origami is a fun, relaxing art form that lets you create unlimited art in unlimited places... your imagination is the only limit you have.
There are thousands of quality Origami books, videos, courses, activity guides, art manuals, movies and documentaries, etc. available -- and some not so good ones also.
When I put together the short reference guide in the back of your Teach Me Origami! book, it was as difficult as trying to fly an Origami airplane in a hail storm...
Finding the good resources for you and making sure to leave off the poor quality materials, sites and pages took a lot of time! "Whew!" As Alexis would say!
Still, I did give you a great starter list of some of the best resources you'll find on Origami anywhere...
A list of reputable people, a huge list packed with;
- Quality resources and experts so you don't have to spend
the hours I did looking for them...
- Reputable suppliers recommended by friends
and associates whom I trust and also made up of people I've personally
called for you...
- Well Researched Origami history links and materials if
you like history and want to learn more about where Origami is from (I
am a bit of a history buff myself)...
- Holiday and themed art projects so you can
impress friends and family for the holidays and never run out of things
to talk about!
- Hundreds of online and offline places where you can get new projects, designs and activities to expand your Origami skills...
Did you know that Origami art brings one of the single largest groups of art lovers on the planet together each year to New York City USA?
Origami and the Guinness Book?
In Fact, Origami has several categories in the Guinness Book of World records it's so popular!
The categories in the Guinness Book of World Records to date, that are origami related are;
- The largest Origami model (this is HUGE! How did they fold that thing?!)
- The smallest Origami model (amazing, this thing is so teensy weensy small!)
- The quickest time to fold 100 cranes, and...
- The longest flight of an indoor Origami plane (Want to know how long? I reveal it inside along with the details of the man who holds the current record!)...
Do you know what the smallest Origami art piece on record is?
Do you know how small this Tiny Origami work is (I was amazed the first time I saw this - how DID he fold that teeny-tiny piece of paper anyway?!)?
The
Largest Origami Crane
Weighed Over 1,700 pounds!
There's a picture of this humongous Origami Crane inside Teach Me Origami! for you to see...
It's amazing.
Kids created it for the World Peace Project in Seattle Washington, USA and it's HUGE!
Imagine a 150 foot long Origami Snake!
Wait 'til you see the picture inside... it was actually created in India for the Year of the Snake in 2001 (it has been a while back, but it's still amazing to see!).
Origami even helps a Mexican charity thrive by having farmers and people in the community create Origami art from things as mundane as candy wrappers, newspapers, scraps of trash, etc. From these humble origins, they create beautiful picture frames, creatures, creations, and art!
How Hard Is It
to Learn Origami?
Even the youngest children can discover how to do the most basic Origami art...
And, as you get better and better you will want to tackle more challenging creations yourself.
Origami is a hobby that can grow with you throughout your entire life.
You gain so many wonderful advantages and benefits from Origami;
- Origami helps you relax -
whether you are sharing a hand made Origami gift with a stranger or
getting a warm smile from a child...
- You can create a small, Origami Turtle or Frog, made from a dollar bill, and watch her eyes light up for you!
Origami art is in museums and can be as simple as a child's Puppy Dog or as complex as any engineer can think... the possibilities are endless.
Actually, I was reading recently where they are going to release Origami paper airplanes made out of very special paper from a Satellitein space as an experiment!
*INTERESTING NOTE: The Origami planes are to be launched from an orbiting Satellite, will withstand the heat of flying back through the Earths atmosphere and the speeds (up to mach 7!) created by the Earths gravitational pull!
Okay, so that is a little outside of what you'll be creating when you start your first Origami art roughly 7 minutes from now... but, it's interesting to know, right?
Whether You Came
Here Today to
Get My Book as a Gift
For Someone
or to Learn Origami Yourself...
You're loving the simple to create and easy to do, fun Origami projects I've included inside for you already and we're just going over the outline here - the full 53 page manual is so much more!
The projects selected inside Teach Me Origami! start out very easy...
... then get a little more detailed as you work toward the beautiful Origami Rose that your friends and family will cherish when you create one for them, as one of your final projects included.
The tools for these Origami designs are very simple...
Basically, you want paper and a surface to do your folding on...
That's it!
If you like, a ruler or pair of scissors will come in handy, but even these aren't necessary because I'll show you a few tricks to help you get your paper the right size without any extra tools.
Do You Have to
Use Special Paper?
No, absolutely not.
- There is Origami paper and Foil - from fun and frilly to fancy foils and very expensive decorative professional art quality papers.
However, Alexis and I simply use what is handy we even used a Wriggly Spearmint™ gum wrapper and a dollar bill the first time we folded Origami together (and often still do today because Alexis likes the smaller Origami and dollar bill art).
We've graduated to colored paper, wrapping paper, and "Alexis's crayon drawings" paper now...
My daughter is a creative jitterbug and can't site still without doodling or drawing something...She loves Origami and even creates her own creatures and creations (at the time of my writing this, she is only 7 years old...)!
So, you don't need anything fancy either... part of the joy of Origami is that you can use whatever is handy to create.
In fact, sometimes, I think people are more impressed by the dollar bill Turtle Origami left as a tip or the fun napkin Rose, than they would be if you created a Museum piece using the most expensive Origami paper.
What
About Patterns and
Step-by-Step
Instructions?
I bet you didn't even think about paper airplanes as Origami, did you (I confess, I didn't myself)?
So, if you know how to make a paper airplane, you already know basic Origami!
Still, inside Teach Me Origami! I give you 7 complete patterns including detailed written and graphical instructions to help you.
Do
I Need Special Skills
or Artistic Talents?
The word Origami comes from two separate words; the first word
is ori, which means
folding
and kami, which
means paper.
This means that if you can fold paper, you are already doing Origami! There's nothing difficult or magical about it at all...
As you get more advanced you want to try new, more advanced ways of folding and you find several of these special techniques inside Teach Me Origami!
There are the two basic folds that, once mastered, you will be well on your way to making amazing Origami sculptures of your very own.
*NOTE: If I can do this, anybody can... I am about as artistic as a brick, but LOVE doing Origami with my daughter..."
There are five additional folds we'll cover together inside... all very easy to do and in full detail with pictures for you to practice them.
The Origami folds you'll master inside include:
- Book Fold and Cupboard Fold
- Valley Fold and Mountain Fold
- Triangle Fold (also known as shawl fold or diaper fold)
- Inside Reverse Fold
- Outside Reverse Fold
- Squash Fold (Alexis giggles when we talk about the Squash fold, she says "..the name reminds me of school lunch! Yuck!" ;o)
Okay... so now we've gone over the places you can do Origami... the tools you'll need, the paper and the folds (all so easy my seven year old daughter can do them!)...
"Your First Origami Projects!"
There are countless thousands of beginner origami patterns you can create.
I’ve selected seven of the most popular projects that are recommended by Origami beginners and teachers to get you started.
These start out very easy and get a little more challenging as you move toward the Origami Rose, the most advanced project of the group (but you can do it!).

First, we cover the Talking Dog (yes, it actually moves its mouth open and closed like it's talking when finished!).
This is the perfect Origami project to get you started or for creativity time, play time, party time or just to dip your toes in the cool Origami waters.
Each project is laid out for you in graphical, step-by-step instructions that are very easy to follow...
Step 1: It's
easy!
Step 2: Like this...
Step 3: Everyone can follow along...

Then we move to the Simple Origami Hat (great for birthday parties, play time, and costume making!)...
Kids especially light up when you show them how to make Origami hats.
Watch them create their own and parade around the house...
Adults secretly like wearable Origami... even if they won't wear these hats to the office! This simple hat is a super starter project for you.
Another fun thing you can do with the hats is decorate them with feathers, beads, or simply colored paper or crayon designs if you like.
Fun, simple, easy to do... and everyone loves Origami hats... especially the children!

Why not make your own Origami Triangle Box to put candy or snacks or other knick-knacks in for your guests?

Your first Origami Box!
This design actually uses three pieces of paper.
So, you'll get to see how to connect multiple pieces of paper together to create your own Origami art.
These are great for kids parties because you can actually have the kids make them and take them home.
Plus, it only costs you the price of the paper.
The kids have a blast making them and sharing them with each other.
My Daughter's favorite in this book...
The Lucky Ladybug!
The first time we folded the Lucky LadyBugs, we had to make a dozen of them together, all different colors!
We had; green ones with yellow spots, yellow ones with red spots, blue ones with green spots, the red one with black spots you see to the right, etc.
A whole Ladybug army!
Her friends at school loved them and she gave them all away accept the pink one...
She still has that one hanging on her bedroom mirror to keep all for herself.

The Intermediate Origami Projects
These are actually very easy and once you've done the first projects above, you'll be folding these beautiful creations with ease.
The Four Point Star - MY Favorite!

Four cool reasons why you want to make Four Point Origami Stars:
- They are absolutely beautiful
and your friends and family will want you to show them how to make them
(which is always fun)...
- They make great gifts,
decorations for the holidays and conversation pieces...
- If you are like me, you'll be really proud
of yourself when you make these...
- It's really fun to teach a group of kids or friends... and you'll get to be the "Star!" who shows them how!
Uhm... okay, I do get a bit excited I know...
It's just that I personally love the Origami Stars -- you agree that their a lot of fun to create also, you'll see!
You find yourself being asked how to create them and teaching others how to make them for sure (all my friends and family asked me and my daughter to show them how... she was so proud of herself!).
A Rose by Any Other Name...
Is Still a Rose!
Next, together we'll create a Rose for your favorite person... or, to keep for yourself!
Origami Roses have a sort of magical quality to them...
I personally think it's because you take the time to carefully create the rose yourself - that's what makes it so special.
You didn't just buy it... you created it for a friend, a lover or child.
When you see the smile you get as you hand the hand-made Origami Rose to someone you care for...
You clearly understand the magic of Origami.

Those are all of the projects I cover with you in great detail and walk you through, holding your hand, step-by-step, to share the joy of Origami accept for one last Origami creation...
Finally, we finish with one last project...

Your Very Own
Origami Boat!
This boat is fun, adorable, and perfect to use for many occasions.
Did you know that they even have water proof Origami paper available so you can really float it on water without sinking the ship?
Yup, they do.
All you need to create this boat is a piece of rectangular paper: Any size will do.
- Children’s parties,
- Games with the family, your church gatherings and friends,
- Fun activities for your child's classroom, or
- Just a bit of relaxation for yourself (you’ll love watching your boat float on the water - even without the water-proof paper! – it’s even better than a message in a bottle.)
After you create your first project just minutes from now, be careful...
Origami is Addictive!
You'll find yourself looking for paper to fold in waiting rooms and at work, at lunch or in restaurants.
And, you'll be sharing this wonderful new hobby of yours with family and friends, laughing about how funny the Origami Dog looks or sharing a hug for giving someone you love a lovingly crafted Origami Rose.
Hold on though, there's more inside for you...
In Chapter Six I give you many quality resources so you can go beyond just my book.
There are thousands of Origami resources, I've sifted through them to find the gems... the best places for you to begin looking for additional information, supplies, or resources.
Inside your copy of Teach Me Origami! I share the following quality resources with you;

I've even included references for Movies and Documentaries about Origami (which are great to watch and learn from, but are wonderful teaching tools for younger children, adults or classrooms as well).
All of these great resources in one place saves you time and money...
As you become better at Origami and challenge yourself with more advanced projects, you find yourself referring back to this great resource time and again.
And, in Chapter Seven you'll get to see some of the incredible art you can create once you become an Origami Master artist and begin experimenting with your own creations.
